Martin Cole – Sex Educator. In 1971 Martin Cole, a genetics’ lecturer at Aston University, Birmingham, made a sex education film called ‘Growing Up’ that provoked a storm of protest in the UK and turned him into one of the most controversial figures of the day. ‘Growing Up’ used explicit images of young people engaged in a variety of sexual activities. Churchmen and politicians queued to denounce him but the film was widely seen by the intended audience. “My greatest hope is that this teenage generation will grow up with fewer hang-ups than their parents’, he told me when I photographed him and his wife in 1970. “I’m working on the assumption that reason will prevail.”
